“Soča, you are a beautiful daughter of the mountains”. That is how the famous Slovenian poet Simon Gregorčič described the Slovenian river Soča, which impresses everyone with its emerald color and picturesque surroundings.

For a lot of visitors Soča is one of the most amazing rivers in Europe. It is especially popular amongst people who enjoy fishing, rafting, canoeing and other outdoor activities.

With its mountains and plateaus that surround the Soča river, it is also well-liked amongst mountain climbers, hikers and backcountry skiers.

For the cyclists there are many beautiful roads with breathtaking views of Slovenian nature.

Among other things you can enjoy the local culinary specialties and see the heritage of WW1.

In order to insure that you will have the best time of your life and an easier time cycling, we have organized transfers with a van or train on some parts of the tour. You will cycle in a small group from 6-12 people with a local guide.

Arrival at your destination:

Slovenia is easily accessible as it is well-connected with the European network of motorways, railway lines and airports. More info on Getting To and Around Slovenia

  1. By car:
    Slovenia is easily accessible and offers a good network of roads. Across the Tauern-motorway (A10) to Villach, then forward on the motorway (A2) direction Tarvisio-Italy. From there you enter Slovenia on the road SS54 overpassing the Predil pass. In Slovenia, you follow road 203 through Soča valley until you reach Tolmin.
  2. By bus & train:
    Bus: Slovenia is connected with the following bus companies Euro, Touring and Flixbus. The majority have a stopover in Jesenice or Bled. From there you can take a train to Most na Soči, which takes ca.1,5Hour.
    Train: several international trains arrive in Slovenia on a daily basis. The closest station is in Most na Soči. Train Station Most na Soči (ca. 4 km away from Tolmin) is directly on the railway conection München – Jesenice – Nova Gorica.     From the train station, you can take a taxi, the local bus (pay directly to the driver) or contact us to organize private transportation (see table for prices).
  3. By aeroplane:
    Several airlines offer flights to Slovenia. Airport Ljubljana-Brnik (ca. 90 km away from Tolmin), Airport Venice Marco Polo (ca. 170 km), or Airport Ronchi Dei Legionari Trieste (ca. 70 km). Upon request, we can organize a transfer. More on To Slovenia by air.

The tour is light-moderate. Some of the stages have transfer included. The tour is suitable for children from the age of 14.

Day 1: Arrival in Tolmin

Arrival in hotel Dvorec 3* in Tolmin. Tolmin is located approximately in the middle of Soča Valley, therefore it is a great starting point for cycling in all directions. Before the dinner will be bike delivery with personal settings of the bike and a welcome meeting with a presentation of the tour.

Day 2: Round tour Tolmin

Today you will visit the most beautiful places near Tolmin, like a confluence of river Soča and Tolminka and the famous Tolmin Gorges with the Devil’s bridge and Dante’s cave. The Tolmin gorges are also the lowest and for many the most beautiful entry point into the picturesque Triglav National Park. More demanding cyclists will be able to climb to the Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in the Javorca plateau, bearing the stamp of European Cultural Heritage – an additional 15km of cycling.

Day 3: Nova Gorica-Kanal-Tolmin

The first part of the journey will lead you from Tolmin to the town Most na Soči. We take a train to Nova Gorica, known as Slovenian Las Vegas. We highly recommend a visit to the tombs of the last Bourbons and a garden with Bourbon roses in Kostanjevica monastery (optional). After a short stroll and a coffee in the city of roses, you will cycle past the Solkan Bridge, which is known for being the longest stone arch in the world. Cycling on the new cycle lane along the Soča River brings us to the small town Kanal ob Soči, where we’ll enjoy the stunning view of the famous bridge, from which every year a diving competition takes place.

Day 4: Bovec-Tolmin

Morning transfer to Bovec. A small town in upper Soča Valley is a great starting point for outdoor activities. Especially popular are rafting, kayak and canoe, canyoning, etc. Our tour goes along the Soča River to Kobarid. This is the most beautiful part of Soča’s path to the Sea, because it offers a lot of rapids and pools. It truly is a beautiful sight to behold. Along the way, you can also admire the waterfall Boka, with the biggest flow rate in Slovenia and visit the idyllic waterfall Kozjak.

Day 5: Kolovrat-Goriška Brda-Gorica-Tolmin

Morning transfer to Kolovrat mountain, where you can visit the Outdoor museum of I. WW. You will slowly descend towards Goriška brda. You are greeted by the Julian Alps behind you and before your eyes slowly open the view of the Friuli plain. In Brda, you can enjoy a glass of wine and some of the typical Brda dishes with a stunning view of vine-growing hills. The plain follows through vineyards to Gorizia, a border town with a rich history and architecture. A wander around the city is followed by a train ride from Nova Gorica to Most na Soči and short cycling back to Tolmin.

Day 6: A bike tour around Senica

An unpretentious and scenic circular path takes us around a 650 m high Senica hill, which offers a magnificent view of the emerald Soča and the Krn and Kanin mountains. Continue along the regional road to Most na Soči, a small town sunbathing on the pier above the confluence of Soča and Idrijca. The place is one of the most important archeological sites in the Southeastern Alps. Next to the town, there is an accumulation lake, a home of the charming paddle wheeler Lucija. A few kilometers ahead we finish our tour in Tolmin.

Day 7: Tolmin-Robič with Nadiža River-Kobarid

You will ride from Tolmin towards Kobarid and forward to the Nadiža River. Nadiža is one of the warmest rivers in this part of the Alps, therefore it is perfect for those who want to have a swim in the most beautiful pools that nature has to offer. By the river, you can observe the Napoleon bridge. The afternoon is reserved for sightseeing in Kobarid, the culinary center of the valley. You can visit the WW1 museum (optional) and enjoy local food and wine in any of the restaurants. In the end, it follows the last transfer to Tolmin, where the cycling tour in Soča Valley ends.
