The starting point of this guided bike tour is Bled, the Pearl of Slovenia. The image of Bled with the castle, the lake and the island in the middle of the lake with the church is worldwide known. The route leads through the idyllic, medieval towns and their picturesque landscapes with a stopover in the capital Ljubljana, which has become in recent years one of the most popular city destinations in Europe. Continue to Notranjska Land, where we go to visit the world-famous Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. Entering on the Karst area you will cycle on quiet, easy and scenic paved roads through vineyards and ancient villages, where you can taste famous Teran red wine and Karst ham. After Lipica stud farm with famous Lipizzaner white horses and Škocjan caves with Europe’s largest underground canyon, you will reach the Slovenian part of the peninsula Istria. In picturesque Piran you will finally relax your muscles by swiming in Adriatic sea.

  1. By car:
    Slovenia is easily accessible and offers a good network of roads. Across the Tauern-motorway (A10) to Villach, then forward on the motorway (A11) direction Slovenia, passing the “Karawanken-Tunnel” on the motorway (E61) direction Ljubljana- exit Bled.  For the motorway (E61) you need the Vignette (road user charge), otherwise, you can take the first exit Hrušica on the main street 452 and through Jesenice forward to Bled. Distances from European capitals to Bled: Amsterdam: 1,200km, Venice: 260km, Munich: 420km, Vienna: 440km.
  2. By bus & train:
    Bus: Slovenia is connected with the following bus companies Euro, Touring and Flixbus. The majority have a stopover in Bled or Lesce.
    Train: several international trains arrive in Slovenia on a daily basis. The closest station is in Bled Jezero. Train Station Lesce-Bled (ca. 4 km away from Bled) is directly on the international railway connection München – Ljubljana.     From the bus or train station you can take a taxi, the local bus (pay directly to the driver) or contact us to organize private transportation (see table for prices).
  3. By airplane:
    Several airlines offer flights to Slovenia. Airport Ljubljana-Brnik (ca. 35 km away from Bled) , Klagenfurt (ca. 80 km) or Ronchi dei Legionari Trieste (ca. 170 km). Upon request, we can organize a transfer. More on To Slovenia by air

Day 1: Arrival in Bled

Individual arrival to the starting hotel in Bled. Before the dinner will be bike delivery with personal settings of the bike and a welcome meeting with a presentation of the tour.

Day 2: Bled - Škofja Loka

The first stage leads us through the Old Towns of Gorenjska-Upper Carniola region. From Bled we cycle along the river Sava to the old town of Radovljica, and through Begunje, a hometown of Slavko Avsenik and Polka music. After Tržič and Kranj, the leg ends in Škofja Loka, with the best-preserved medieval town center in Slovenia. For those with less physical fitness, a sag wagon will be available to shorten the route.

Day 3: Škofja Loka - Ljubljana

Škofja Loka live us fascinated with its story and many legends, but there is another highlight on this tour, that is waiting for us…Ljubljana, the Green Capital of Europe in 2016, is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Europa. The Sava river will campaign us mostly on our way to the capital. The finish is at Zmajski most-in English Dragon Bridge, which is one of the symbols of Ljubljana.

Ljubljana - Logatec - Postojna

Today we drive first with the train or private transfer to Logatec in the Notranjska region. Here we start to pedaling through quiet fields and forest to gorge Rakov Škocjan, Slovenia’s oldest landscape park with amazing natural bridges and other landscape formations. The stage finished in Postojna, where we go to visit the Postojna caves, the most extensive cave system in Slovenia with stalagmites, stalactites and famous “human fish” Proteus.

Postojna - Kodreti / Vipava Valley

This day begins with another attraction, the Predjama Castle, a castle with its unique position below the 123-meter cliff. A story tells about a robber knight Erasmus, which kept the whole army at bay by utilizing the caves underneath the castle to sneak out for supplies. After a spectacular descent to Vipava Valley, one of the most famous wine regions in Slovenia, we end the day in a family guesthouse, where we’ll enjoy in dinner with a typical local food and wine.

Kodreti / Vipava Valley - Divača / Škocjan

The first stop on today’s stage is Štanjel, an idyllic karst settlement built mostly from stones on the top of the hill. Through picturesque karst villages, vineyards with numerous wine cellars, which invites everybody for a stop and a tasting of first-class Teran wines and karst ham, we reach stud farm of Lipica, home of beautiful white Lipizzaner horses, famous worldwide.

Route detail: ca. 49 km, + 630 m / – 365 m.

Day 7: Divača / Škocjan - Piran

Today is time to visit Škocjan Caves, UNESCO World Heritage and the protected area. The Karst Plain accompanies as on the way to the Adriatic Sea, we’ll follow the route of the old railway lines Val Rosandra and Parenzana. For the last part, we’ll cycle along the coastal road on a new cycling path enjoying great vistas of Slovenia’s lovely coast. The tour ends in the gorgeous little Venetian town of Piran, where we can watch the sunset from the church bell tower or swimming in the blue Adriatic Sea.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast you have time to walk through the narrow streets of picturesque Piran or simply enjoy at the beach with a fresh drink. After lunch we leave the coast line and drive back to the mountains, to see again the pearl of Slovenia-Bled.
